Driver Assessing for the Haulage Industry

A standard on-road driver assessment takes between sixty and ninety minutes and follows a route representative of the driver's normal duties — so a multi-drop urban driver is assessed in traffic and at delivery points, while a trunking driver is assessed on dual carriageway and motorway work.

The assessor observes the walk-round and daily defect check, cab and mirror setup, use of the tachograph, moving-off and stopping technique, observation and mirror discipline, junction and roundabout approach, positioning and lane discipline, speed appropriate to conditions, following distances, fuel-efficient driving technique, manoeuvring and reversing, and behaviour at the delivery or collection point.

The driver receives verbal feedback immediately. The operator receives a structured written report with observed strengths, any faults categorised by severity, a competence rating, and specific recommendations — remedial training, further monitoring, or sign-off as competent.

Traffic Commissioners expect operators to be able to demonstrate an active driver-management system, not just a file of licences. Documented, independent driver assessments are among the clearest pieces of evidence an operator can produce at a public inquiry or preventative-maintenance audit, alongside licence checks, infringement reports and CPC records.

There is a commercial case too. Insurers price commercial fleet cover on claims history, and the majority of claims on any fleet come from a minority of drivers. Identifying that minority before a claim — rather than after — is the cheapest risk reduction available to most operators.

The third case is recruitment. A pre-employment assessment tells you within ninety minutes whether the CV in front of you matches the driver in the cab. Given the cost of a bad hire — insurance impact, vehicle damage, lost customers, re-recruitment — it is a small spend for a large amount of certainty.

We assess across all HGV and PCV categories, in your vehicles and on your routes, at a time that fits your operation — including early starts, back shifts and weekends. For multi-driver programmes we will usually work through a shift's worth of drivers in a day and deliver the reports as a single batch with a summary for the transport manager.

Where an assessment identifies a development need, we can deliver the follow-up training directly, which keeps the loop closed rather than leaving a report on a desk. That might be a half-day of targeted coaching on reversing and manoeuvring, fuel-efficient driving, or a full CPC module for the whole team.
