Glasgow has the most training providers and the most noise

West central Scotland has more HGV schools than anywhere else in the country, and prices advertised there vary wildly for reasons that are not always visible. Common differences: how many trainees share the cab, whether the DVSA test fee and vehicle hire on test day are included, whether Module 4 CPC is part of the package, and whether the school controls its own reversing area or borrows one.

The Clyde, the M8 and where the Class 1 work is

Container haulage off the Clyde, supermarket RDCs at Newhouse and Bellshill, the parcel and pallet networks along the M8, and construction supply across Lanarkshire form the bulk of the Class 1 market. Almost all of it is artic work, which means Category C+E rather than C alone.

Rigid Class 2 work is strong within the city itself — waste, municipal, builders' merchants, brewery and drinks distribution, multi-drop retail. It is a genuinely good place to start if you want steady daytime hours rather than nights and tramping.

Planning the trip so you are not commuting daily

Glasgow to Kirkcaldy is around 70 minutes via the M80, M9 and Kincardine Bridge. Doing that twice a day for five days is possible but not ideal before and after intensive training. We schedule Glasgow blocks with later starts where we can, and we can point you to accommodation near the yard for the driving-heavy days.

Cumbernauld, Kirkintilloch, Coatbridge and Airdrie drivers are meaningfully closer — typically 50 to 60 minutes — and usually commute without difficulty.

The standard route into Class 1 work for a new pass anywhere in west central Scotland is a period of agency shifts, building experience across different operators and vehicle types before taking a permanent seat. It is not a fallback; it is how most experienced drivers you will meet actually started.

We run a driver agency alongside the school, which means we can place drivers we have trained and assessed ourselves. Employers take that assessment seriously precisely because we are the ones who taught them.
