What the exercise involves, step by step
The Category 3a exercise is carried out in a marked-out area on a private yard. You start from a set position, drive forward past a start cone, then reverse the vehicle in a controlled S-shaped path between marked boundaries and stop with the rear of the vehicle inside a defined box — close enough to the rear line to demonstrate accuracy, without touching it.
You are permitted to pull forward to correct yourself a set number of times, and you may get out to look. Neither is a fault in itself; using the shunts sensibly is far better than pressing on and hitting a boundary marker. What the examiner is judging is control, accuracy, and above all your use of mirrors and effective observation of the area around the vehicle.
Faults are recorded for hitting or crossing boundaries, finishing outside the box, exceeding the allowed corrections, or reversing without proper observation. The exercise is deliberately unforgiving on precision because the real-world equivalent — a blindside reverse into a loading bay with a forklift working two bays down — is unforgiving too.
