Why north-east drivers travel for intensive training
Training options thin out considerably north of Dundee, and the ones that exist often have to send you elsewhere for the reversing test. Because our lead instructor is a Delegated DVSA Examiner, the Category 3a off-road element and Module 4 CPC happen at our yard — which means an Aberdeen trainee can complete the whole practical qualification in a single trip south rather than making repeat journeys for separate test dates.
That is the entire logic of the intensive block. Two hours down the A90 and A92, one concentrated stretch of training, licence in hand, back north.
Planning an intensive block from Aberdeenshire
Most north-east trainees book accommodation locally for the training week rather than commuting. Tell us your dates when you enquire and we will help plan the week — including which days are the heaviest driving so you can arrange the stay sensibly.
Have the paperwork finished before you travel. Group 2 medical, provisional Category C entitlement and the CPC theory and Module 2 case studies all need to be in place before practical tests can be booked. Arriving with any of those outstanding is the one thing that wastes an intensive block.
The north-east market: energy, food and ADR
Aberdeen's driving economy is shaped by energy logistics and the offshore supply base, food and fish processing distribution, and agricultural transport across Aberdeenshire. Class 1 rates in the north east compare well with anywhere in Scotland, and ADR-certified tanker and dangerous-goods work sits at the top of that range.
ADR is a separate qualification from a separate provider, but it is worth planning for. Get the Class 1 and CPC first — that is what we deliver — then add ADR once you are working and, in many cases, once an employer will fund it.
Costs, finance and the total picture
Class 1 from £1,595, Class 2 from £1,395 and C1 from £995, with DVSA fees, the medical and theory listed separately. For north-east trainees, budget travel and accommodation on top and compare that against what a local provider charges once their test waiting time is factored in.
Ideal4Finance instalments from around £79 a month are available, with a soft eligibility check. Energy-sector employers in the north east are also among the more likely in Scotland to part-fund a licence for an existing employee.
